The German Underground
Hospital comprises a system of tunnels excavated under terrible conditions
by workers brought from all over Europe, many of whom lost their lives
in the process. Today, the experience of Jersey’s wartime population
is presented in these haunting spaces. Captive
Island is designed not only to attract tourists, but to be a fitting
tribute to hose who endured the years of occupation. Audiovisual
presentations include witness accounts from housewives who coped
with shortages, children who played with soldiers and defiant teenagers
who tried to escape. Atmospheric lighting and sound in a section
of unfinished tunnel suggest the indescribable conditions under
which men laboured.
