The National 1798 Centre, Enniscorthy, Co. Wexford

Opened on 5th June 1998 by the Irish Prime Minister, Bertie Ahern. The National 1798 Centre was designed to provide a lasting memorial to those who lost their lives in 1798, as well as highlighting the bicentennial commemorations. Community involvement takes centre stage: the highpoint of the displays is a dramatic four screen re-enactment of the Battle of Vinegar Hill by local volunteers. Four hundred men and women, without acting experience, recreated the battle over two wintry days in November 1997. The resulting presentation is memorable, moving and powerful.
